Field of Beans - build it and they will come...

Kevin Costner agricultural puns aside, we made our first major input into the finca's soil fertility today. We sowed 120m2 of broad beans, peas and forage turnips. The leguminous peas and beans will fix nitrogen in the soil and create lots of biomass that will be chopped and dropped onto the soil surface. The turnips will help bust through our heavily compacted clay soil and will be left in situ to compost down slowly leaving channels behind allowing water and oxygen deeper into the ground. When our chickens arrive we will also tractor them through the area to fill up on tasty greens! And we may have a nibble on a pea or two ourselves...

Next year this field will be our first forest garden zone.
